Ukrainian mail order bride

oil paint

mixed media (ink, acrylic, oil)

The title of the painting speaks for itself.

The primary goal of this project was to poke fun at the current situation in the Eastern European countries, where the mail order bride business is a common occurrence.

Dream:Motherhood

graphite pencil, watercolors, photoshop

In this experimental project I wanted to recreate a dream-like environment that would have a surrealistic atmosphere. It is a dream about motherhood, where a fish is a symbol of a new life.

Painting in process

I am working on this painting with a palette knife. Lately, I find myself not satisfied with the results that brushes produce, they give too much control. And when I have a lot of control over a brush, a painting seems to die. It become systematic and too technical.

Depicting movement in my paintings has always been one of my goals. Sometimes i really wish the imagery did move literally.
I feel like through the repetition of forms I can achieve this goal to some extend...

hm-m-m. I need to post something. Lately I' ve been so uninspired to paint, that when I hold a brush I don't know what to do with it anymore... Artistic crisis?
Nevertheless, I have many painting I've been hiding under my bed for the last two years. I suppose I need to expose them to the audience...

This is my mommy's version of the same landscape. I love it so much.
I really wish she continues painting!!! She has a great potential!!!

Tuesday, January 13, 2009

This is the landscape painting i did while staying at home in Ukraine.
I was working mostly with a palette knife, which made the painting process faster
me and my mum , who never painted before, were working on the same image.
It was very inspiring painting together.

This is the portrait of my dearest friend Kenneth Shofela Coker. Painting him was enjoyable and captivating.

Hm... Maybe that is why I worked on it for so long, stretching a pleasure..

Am I updating my blogger?!. Finally... It feels like reaching a top of a mountain. I need to discipline myself to get into a habit of keeping up with it...
Anyway, one of the recent paintings that I have been working on is the painting I did for the National Portrait Gallery Competition.
The process of the painting was long due to many distractions and procrastination on my part... so having it finished makes me want to celebrate.
Here are some photographs of it in progress.

Thursday, May 15, 2008

This is a finished version of the painting... As I've said earlier, I am not very happy with it. It makes me want to go over it with gesso, which I might do eventually. I think, I lost my original intention for the painting during the process of working on it. I found out that working on one piece for a long period of time does nothing ,but harms it, taking away life from painting.

Tuesday, April 8, 2008

I am doing this painting for my painting class. It is still in progress, but i prefer the way it looks on this picture. I added more figures to it and realized that i overworked the painting. unfortunately, it lost the freshness of the brushwork... :(

identity

It is one of the paintings i did for Holiday Bazaar, I was really pleased to find out that it was sold.
This painting was an experimental for me ( it is the first one to combine oil with acrylic). Working on it i was relying a lot on spontaneity, no planning. I think, i am satisfied with the result.
